Steve Austin vs. PN News
Clash of the Champions
November 1991
Now granted, this match is NOT a classic, but it does let everyone know that at one point Steve Austin was a scrubby champion. Austin was the TV Champion and his valet was Lady Blossom, incidentally, he had long flowing blonde hair and cute little multicolored shorts on! This match took place at the Civic Center in Savannah, Georgia at the 1991 Clash of the Champions. It was commentated by Jim Ross and Tony Schiavonne.
The match starts out with Austin attacking News from behind with a barrage of double axe-handles and punches. News got back at him by holding Austin in a choke-hold and throwing him down. He put Austin in the corner and started to pound on him. He swung Austin across the ring and followed up with a splash. As Austin murked out of the corner, News hit him with a clothesline from behind, sending Austin on his face.
News picked up Austin and held him up for a big bodyslam which he followed up with a big elbow. Austin rolled out of the ring and tried to avoid News. After getting News to follow him a little way around the ring, Austin kicked him in the stomach and began to beat on his head. However, when he tried to put News into the steel guard barrier, News reversed and sent Austin crashing into the rail. News rolled Austin back into the ring and was received with an Austin double axe-handle. Austin went for a bodyslam, but News was too much and Austin gave way. News only got a two count, though.
News sent Austin into the ropes and delivered a big boot to the stomach. He followed up with a suplex that landed Austin in the ropes. As News went for the pin, Austin grabbed the tights and threw him out of the ring and onto the ramp. Austin started pounding on News again. He went for a flying body press to hit News back into the ring but got thrown over News’ back instead. News enters the ring and delivers a kick and a punch to Austin before sending him to the ropes. He goes for the bear hug and winds up delivering a belly to belly suplex. He got a two count before Blossom put Austin’s foot on the rope. While News went after Blossom, Austin delivered a blow to News from the top rope and gave News a beating outside the ring. Austin put News in the ring and beat him with his feet on the ropes.
After watching this match, I can tell you that Stunning Steve Austin is no where near as dynamic or electric as Stone Cold. However, I do find it odd that during the reconstructive years of WCW, they let P. N. News get a title shot at a Clash of the Champions. Well, they are on top now and I guess that that is all that matters. This particular Clash was really good and had MANY stars in it. I won’t tell you who, but you can watch the tape and find out! I’m open to all e-mail asking for matches to review. Bye!!!
